Following Pearl Jam’s performance in Lisbon, Jeff Ament showed his gratitude on Instagram: “Goodbye and thank you, European peeps. It was great to end on a high note after some challenges in the middle. Hopefully, we’ll be back next year, Londoners and Berliners.”
Pearl Jam has opened up about the cancellation of their highly-anticipated London show last month. The band, fronted by Eddie Vedder, was scheduled to perform at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, June 29. However, the day before the concert, they announced the cancellation due to “illness in the band” and, despite best efforts, the concert was not rescheduled.
Pearl Jam managed to perform in Manchester earlier that week, but fans noticed the band seemed to be struggling. Subsequently, they canceled their shows in Berlin on July 2 and 3. However, they resumed their Dark Matter World Tour with performances in Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon.
At the NOS Alive festival in Lisbon, Eddie Vedder addressed the cancellations. Before their final song, “Yellow Ledbetter,” he said, “It was so sad, hard, and terrifying having to cancel shows. We appreciate your patience.” He expressed his love for the audience and promised to remember the night.
During the set, Eddie performed John Lennon’s “Imagine” for the first time on the tour and made a heartfelt plea for a peaceful election process in the United States. He recalled his experiences in Europe and shared his hopes for good leadership to heal the world.
Pearl Jam’s statement regarding the London show cancellation read: “The Pearl Jam concert scheduled for Saturday, June 29, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London has regrettably been canceled due to illness in the band. This decision was the last thing we wanted to have to make, especially as we know so many of you made travel plans based on the tour schedule. There was simply no other option based on our current health and also having to avoid further damage.
“We couldn’t be more disappointed to not play one of our favorite cities this tour. Despite best efforts, rescheduling was not possible at this time due to existing schedule commitments. We are deeply grateful for your support and sincerely apologize to the incredible Pearl Jam community for the inconvenience and disappointment.”
