Serj Tankian recently stated that a new System of a Down album would have to mean “a fresh start in a brand new way” and added that there’s still unreleased System music which could “be interesting in an archival capacity.”

Serj Tankian talks about potential new System of A Down album

System of a Down are yet to release a new album since 2005’s “Mezmerize” and “Hypnotize”, and the band’s status-quo of doing occasional large shows doesn’t leave much hope for a new LP soon.

However, Serj Tankian didn’t categorically oppose to the idea of making new music with Daron Malakian (guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass), and John Dolmayan (drums), even though it seems that the current state of affairs within the band suits him more than most other band members.

During a recent conversation with The Sun, Tankian reckoned that any new release would have to significantly challenge the band and subvert expectations:

“I would say if System ever decided to make a record, it would be a fresh start in a brand new way, in a beautiful new direction.”

Tankian has revealed System has in its store some real “hidden gems” that were recorded but never released to the public:

“We do have some unreleased material from the past that’s set. I forgot how many songs there are, but it’s a handful of them that would be interesting also in an archival capacity because I think some of them are some really amazing gems.”

Earlier this summer, the SOAD vocalist suggested that a new album would also require an uncompromisingly democratic approach in the studio. John Dolmayan has been vocal regarding what he perceived as the band’s inactivity, while the band’s bassist Shavo Odadjian, who’s currently promoting his new band Seven Hours After Violet (SHAV), frequently says he’d be more than eager to get the SOAD train running at full steam again.
