Kid Rock went to the White House recently to support President Donald Trump. He was there to talk about problems with how concert tickets are sold. Kid Rock is upset about bots buying up tickets and people having to pay really high prices on other websites. While he made some good points, what he wore got a lot of attention too.
He wore a loud, flashy suit that had the American flag all over it. This might have broken a rule called the U.S. Flag Code. The Flag Code is a set of rules about how to treat and respect the American flag. It says the flag shouldn’t be used for ads or printed on things like napkins, paper plates, or clothes. It also says the flag shouldn’t be worn as a costume or sports uniform. The rules don’t talk about flag suits directly, but the outfit still goes against what the code is trying to say.
This isn’t the first time Kid Rock has worn American flag clothes. He’s worn flag-themed scarves and golf outfits before. Even though he does this often, he once criticized NFL player Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem, which Kaepernick did to protest unfair treatment of Black people.
Even though Kid Rock may have broken the Flag Code, he probably won’t get in trouble. The Flag Code is a federal law, but it uses words like “should,” so it’s more of a suggestion than a strict rule. Most of the time, people don’t get punished for not following it. Plus, since Kid Rock supports Trump, it’s very unlikely anyone will try to punish him.
However, there is one law in Washington, D.C., that says wearing clothes with the flag on it could be a small crime. If someone really wanted to enforce that law, Kid Rock could get a fine of up to $100 or spend up to 30 days in jail. But this law is rarely used. If he wanted to play it safe, he could just carry around $100 in case someone ever tried to fine him, which is about the price of a few beers at his bar in Nashville.
So in the end, even if Kid Rock broke a rule about how to treat the flag, nothing serious is likely to happen to him.
