On Saturday (April 12th), Green Day headlined the Coachella music festival, performing a setlist filled with hits from their nearly 38-year-long career. Ahead of Billie Joe Armstrong and co.’s set, pop-star Charli XCX also performed, bringing out guest stars Billie Eilish and Lorde to accompany her.

Later that evening, Charli XCX shared a photo to Instagram of her at an afterparty wearing a silk sash that read “Miss Should Be Headliner.”

After seeing the now viral photo, fans online took it as a diss towards Green Day, with them believing Charli XCX was implying that she should have headlined instead of the rock band.

It was not long before the internet was flooded with fans coming to Green Day’s defense.

“Please. as if she’s the same caliber as green day and i’m not even that into green day,” a user on Twitter/X wrote.

“I loathe Green Day, but they’re way bigger and more well-known than she is,” added another, while a third tweeted: “Full shade she has exactly one successful album.”

Trying to put Green Day’s headlining set into perspective, a Twitter/X user wrote: “An acclaimed punk rock group that’s been around for 20+ years & finally got to headline this f*ck*ss festival, only for some lady with a mean girl mentality to think she should headline with NO acclaimed discography but 2 singles from different decades.”

Some fans sided with Charli XCX, however, believing that she should have headlined instead.

“Coachella letting charli get this disrespected needs to be investigated… imagine picking green day over the future of pop,” one fan wrote, while another added: “Charli deserved that headline slot, no cap.”

Charli XCX’s album “Brat” was a major breakout for the singer in 2024, coming over ten years after she released her debut album “True Romance” in 2013.

While her popularity cannot be ignored, it is hard not to point out the lasting impact Green Day’s music has had over the last three decades.

As many online have pointed out, 38-years into their career, Green Day still remain relevant. Currently, the band has 32.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify. As of writing this, Charli XCX has 30.8 million.
