Courtney Love has announced that after nearly six years of living in the UK, she has officially applied for British citizenship. The Hole frontwoman shared the news at a recent event in London hosted by the Royal Geographical Society.

“I’m really glad I’m here. It’s so great to live here,” she said, reflecting on her time in the UK. “I’m finally getting my British citizenship in six months. I get to be a citizen – I’m applying, man! Can’t get rid of me!”

After moving to the UK from Los Angeles in 2019, Love’s decision to finally become a citizen seems to be at least partly due to the political landscape in the US.

Addressing President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, Love added: “It’s like emperor-core, like [they’re] wearing million-dollar watches. Emperor-core is going on at Mar-a-Lago. It’s frightening now. It’s like cyanide now.”

In 2020, the singer spoke to NME about her relocation to London, saying at the time:

“As of October 18 [2020], I have been in London a year. I should say we have been in London a year. I’ve lived here at several points in my life and every time I left the UK, I’d get sad.

“And on top of that you know, for a while I actually did not pick up my guitar. I stopped having the kind of relationship that you need to have with the guitar to write good guitar songs. So, I came here to focus on writing my book and my record.”

Love also mentioned her admiration for the city in 2017 to the Evening Standard, explaining that she always thought she would eventually “end up there” permanently.
