Recently, a video of Deftones frontman Chino Moreno went viral when he confronted autograph collectors.
“Go ahead and tell your friends, I’m not doing this sh*t no more,” he can be heard saying in the clip, addressing a group of people on the street asking him to sign stacks of vinyl records. “You guys go online in your little groups and sh*t, tell people I’m not singing sh*t no more. I signed these right now, but let them know I’m not signing anything.”
Now, a fan on Reddit has shared several listings of signed Deftones albums and a variety of signed instruments on sale online, ranging from $450 to $1,500, validating Moreno’s concerns about autograph seekers.
“Yeah no wonder he got fed up,” one fan wrote on Reddit, with another adding “These people suck.”
Autograph collectors have become a major problem in recent years, with many repeatedly stalking artists in order to get them to sign records and cheap memorabilia just so that they can turn around and sell it for hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars.
Several years ago, Dave Grohl also confronted autograph seekers, telling them that from now on he would no longer be granting autograph requests from these types of people.
“I’m going to say it one more time. I stopped signing sh*t, unless it’s for charity. Okay?” he told a group of people in 2021. When they continued to hound him, asking him to make an exception just for them, he simply said “See ya!” and ran to his car.
