Last year, The Struts’ frontman Luke Spiller revealed in an interview with The Sun that he had written, recorded, and submitted a song for the 2021 James Bond film “No Time to Die” and that it featured late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
The famous film franchise, however, opted to go with Billie Eilish and Finneas’ track instead (a song which went on to win an Oscar, a Grammy, and multiple other awards).
“I’ve always been obsessed with a lot of the Bond songs. I had a crack at it, but got beaten by Billie,” Spiller told the newspaper. “It’s a fantastic song. I called Taylor and we cut the drums in his home studio.”
Now, in a new interview with Lipps Service, Spiller has revealed that the track he and Taylor worked on together – titled “Angel Like You” – will be featured on his upcoming solo album (which will be released next month).
“It really kind of stemmed from this crazy, mad, idea that I wanted to have a go at trying to get a Bond song, at the time,” Spiller said about the song. “And I had these two songs that I’d wrote and I’d recorded them with my producer John Levine. And I just remember I called up Taylor and I was like, ‘You know, this needs like a great, great, drum part on it. Would you be down?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’ So we went up to his house and recorded it and whatnot.
“And it just – It’s amazing when I hear it now he really jumps out of the speakers and all great singers, musicians, they do that. They possess something that jumps through the mix and it sounded great.”
Spiller continued, explaining how these songs inspired him to put out a solo album: “Obviously, I never got the Bond song, which was fine. But, more importantly, like I said, those were the two songs that I then lived with. And then when covid happened, and I wasn’t touring, I had, like, a lot of time to self-reflect and I listened to these tracks – ‘Devil in Me’ and ‘Angel Like You’ – And I thought to myself like, ‘There’s something in this. And, okay, it might not be right for the band, but it really speaks to me, and it’s really from the heart. What if I keep doing stuff like this?’”
