The Who REVERSE decision to FIRE drummer!

The Who has officially reinstated longtime drummer Zak Starkey just days after news broke of his apparent departure from the legendary rock band.

The drama unfolded following the band’s recent performance at the Teenage Cancer Trust benefit concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. During the show, frontman Roger Daltrey expressed clear frustration with the live mix, stating that the drumming was overpowering and made it difficult for him to find the key during certain songs. His remarks were interpreted by many fans and media outlets as a direct criticism of Starkey.

Shortly after the concert, it was reported that Starkey had been let go, a move that stunned fans given his nearly 30-year history with the band and his close ties—he’s the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. Starkey responded to the reports by saying he was “surprised and saddened” by the decision and mentioned that he had recently recovered from a serious health issue involving blood clots in his leg, though he said it had no impact on his playing.

In a new statement released on April 19, guitarist Pete Townshend confirmed that Starkey would continue as The Who’s drummer. Townshend cited communication breakdowns, health issues within the band, and personal misunderstandings as contributing factors to the confusion. He emphasized that the band had worked things out internally and that Starkey had agreed to make some adjustments to his playing style going forward.

Starkey, for his part, expressed his appreciation and reaffirmed his commitment to the band.

The Who will move ahead with their scheduled performances this summer, including a run of shows in Italy, with Starkey behind the drum kit once again.
