Led Zeppelin’s reunion concert in 2007 marked the last time singer Robert Plant had performed “Stairway to Heaven” until just two years ago, when Plant sang the massive hit for the first time in 16 years for a charity event.
Despite occasionally performing Led Zeppelin songs while touring as a solo artist, “Stairway to Heaven” has never made his setlists. Now, we may have an answer as to why.
In a new interview with AXS TV, Plant reflected on the song, revealing that he is not as fond of the 1971 track as he was when he originally wrote it.
“It belongs to a particular time. If I had been involved in the instrumentation, I would feel that it’s a magnificent piece of music which has its own character and personality. My contribution was to write lyrics and to sing a song about fate and something very British, almost abstract,” he said.
“Coming out of the mind of a 23-year-old guy. It landed in the years and the era of 23-year-old guys. As time goes on, you might find that another period of your life has more substance. So, as much as I like it, I’m not wedded to that whole deal now.”
