Alright, buckle up because Sammy Hagar just called out David Lee Roth in the most hilarious, but deadly accurate way. And honestly? He’s got a point.
Back in fall 2021, Diamond Dave — the one and only David Lee Roth — dramatically announced, “I’m throwing in the shoes!” It was like he was hanging it all up for good. Fast forward to 2025, Guess who’s suddenly not retired? Diamond Dave. He is booked to headline the M3 Rock Festival in Maryland this May.
Now, Sammy Hagar spoke about this in a new interview with the Review-Journal. And Sammy, being Sammy, didn’t even pretend to dance around it. Hagar said David Lee Roth’s “retirement” played into the decision to lean into a Van Halen-dominated show.
He flat-out laughed and said: “You take Dave’s words from his own mouth. What did he say? ‘How many times did Rocky retire?’ You know, there’s ‘Rocky 5.’ Well, here we go: We’re seeing ‘Diamond Five.’ I just hope that in black-and-white print, this comes out with a sense of humor, that we’re laughing.”
David Lee Roth will be headlining at the M3 Rock Festival from May 2nd to 4th in Columbia, Maryland. These are his first live performances since the House of Blues in January 2020, and the dates running at the same time as Hagar’s Park MGM residency.
Ratt singer Stephen Pearcy and guitarist Warren DeMartini are also set to team up to serve as the headline act. Sebastian Bach will perform on Friday, May 2nd. Accept, Winger, Slaughter and Steven Adler will also perform on Saturday, May 3rd.
